how to cut everything up:
tools, tips and where to start
canvas
anything can be a canvas, but we’ve found that small “artist” panels work well in a collaborative setting. they’re affordable and can support a large group of shared ideas while still feeling uniform.
★ our preferred working size for group events is a 4x6” canvas panel. we think this provides just enough room for play without becoming overly intimidating.
brushes
one of the most vital tools to have at your disposal, the humble paintbrush! large or small, each are essential on your journey.
we like all types of paintbrushes and sponges — sometimes a new brush is all the inspiration you need.
★ you don’t need the world’s best brush to make great art. if you focus too much on the tool, you might miss out on the greater parts.
paint
we don’t think too hard about the brand or type of paint being used. some of our favorite artists used house paint, and we think that’s ok too. just pick up a brush and a color that makes you happy.
★ on paint type — water based acrylic is a good choice for its fast drying properties and easy clean up, dish soap and water does the trick.
paint pens
sometimes a pen is a more familiar tool, and we like that. sharpies, markers, pens, pencils, and crayons are all great to use. whatever makes you most comfortable is always a good choice.
★ we really enjoy using posca round tipped markers, large and small. they’re just like pens, but filled with high pigment acrylic paint that flows well — this is great for layering.
sometimes it feels good to just cut everything up…
some of the best ideas, images or text can come straight from an old discarded book or magazine. mod podge works wonders for making your content stick. its easy to use and dries quickly and clear. sponges and fingers also make good glue brushes.
★ we prefer to find our source material at local book recyclers or second hand shops, mostly in last chance bins, before being thrown out.
get into it.
there is no wrong way to art — draw with markers, scribble with pens, rip and cut paper, glue it down.
it’s up to you (don’t sweat it, you’re doing great)
not sure what to add next? move onto another painting! be collaborative, share your space and remember to work together, not alone!
we couldn’t be happier for everyone who enjoys doing this with us, or creates their own experiences from these ideas.
if you find personal meaning from anything we’ve shared, please let us know and share that with others! we like that kind of thing.
